Rewiring your property

What a rewire involves

A rewire replaces electrical cables and connections. It can cover the whole property or just part of it, depending on the condition of the existing wiring and the work you have planned.

Jamie will look at the wiring, sockets, lighting and consumer unit, then explain what needs replacing and what can stay. It’s also a chance to plan where you want sockets and lights before the work starts.

Your existing electrics

Signs to look out for

These signs are a reason to have the electrics checked, not a diagnosis that you need a rewire. A survey will help establish what work is needed.

  • Old rubber or fabric-covered cable
  • Round-pin sockets
  • Frequent tripping
  • Scorch marks around sockets or switches
  • No RCD protection — the safety device that switches off a circuit when it detects a fault

The right scope of work

Full or partial rewire?

Full rewire

A full rewire replaces wiring throughout the property. The survey helps establish the work needed, including the circuits, sockets, switches, lighting and any changes to the consumer unit.

Partial rewire

A partial rewire replaces wiring in selected parts of the property, such as a kitchen or an extension. The wiring that stays needs to be checked so that the new work can be safely connected.

Planning the work

What to expect

The work, disruption and cost depend on the property. We’ll give a clear quote after a survey.

  1. Survey and quote

Jamie checks the existing installation, talks through what you need and explains the proposed work.

  2. Plan and replace the wiring

Agree socket and lighting positions, access and how the work will be carried out. Rewiring can involve lifting floorboards and opening channels in walls.

  3. Testing and handover

The electrical work is tested and checked, and Jamie talks you through what has been done.

  4. Tidy-up and making good

We’ll discuss clearing up and any plastering, decorating or other making good before work starts, so you know what is included in the quote and what needs arranging separately.
